Overview

Going back to 2010, during baseball season I will often go to a local bar on Tuesday evenings and watch a portion of the Mets game with a good friend of mine. We manage to catch many games and when we do watch together the Mets usually win (around 62% of the time).

Given that for the 2010 through 2014 seasons the Mets had a losing record, I wondered if the Mets just played better on Tuesdays, or if my friend and I had a magic charm.

I decided to put some of my data visualization talents to work and build an interactive dashboard.

My conclusion?

The Mets should be buying us drinks because, historically, the Mets have only won 49% of their games on Tuesdays — and they are only a little better on Tuesdays from 2010 through 2014.

In building the dashboard I also made the following discoveries:

  • There’s clearly more blue than orange on the dashboard showing that the Mets had more losing than winning seasons.
  • In the Mets’ first year (1962) they didn’t win any games on a Thursday.
  • The Mets have their greatest success on Tuesdays in April.
  • In 1985 the Mets narrowly missed winning their division. They played great all year with the exception of June when they lost 62% of their games.
  • The Mets were on a tear for the first three months of 2012 but then went ice cold in July, winning only 28% of their games.  They never recovered.

Try the dashboard for yourself.

And if you find anything surprising, please let me know.
